NBA stars react to blockbuster Luka Doncic trade to Lakers

In a move that sent shockwaves through the basketball world, the Dallas Mavericks decided to part ways with their franchise cornerstone, Luka Dončić. The decision, which many analysts and fans found incomprehensible, raised questions about the Mavericks’ long-term vision and Dončić’s future in the league.

The 25-year-old superstar, a five-time All-NBA First Team selection, was poised to sign a historic five-year, $350 million contract extension with Dallas this summer. Typically, such an offer for a generational talent is a no-brainer. However, reports suggested that the Mavericks hesitated, questioning whether Dončić was worth such a massive investment. Concerns over his conditioning and long-term durability may have played a role in their reluctance.

For Dončić, this trade represents the ultimate slight. Few, if any, players of his caliber have ever been moved in their prime. The Slovenian sensation led Dallas to the NBA Finals last season and has consistently proven to be one of the most dominant offensive forces in the game. Now, paired with LeBron James in Los Angeles, he has the opportunity to elevate his game even further.

From the Lakers’ perspective, this trade signals a transition. While LeBron remains a key figure, the franchise appears to be preparing for a post-LeBron era by acquiring a young superstar to build around. If Dončić learns from James’ work ethic and training habits, he could become the best player in the world for the next decade.

As the dust settles, one thing is certain—the NBA landscape has changed dramatically, and only time will tell who truly won this historic trade.

To say that Luka Doncic being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers was a shocking deal may be the understatement of the century. The Dallas Mavericks choosing to move on from the 25-year-old superstar was something that no one saw coming.

Having a top three player in the world traded with no virtual indication of a deal being in the works was simply perplexing. It left the NBA world with all sorts of stunned reactions. It was not just the fans who were confused and taken aback, but the players too.

NBA players had some of the best reactions to the Doncic trade

Devin Booker is a star who has a strong history with Doncic. The two rivals have been battling in the Western Conference for years and have been involved in some of the most memorable NBA moments of recent times.

When Booker heard the news of the trade, he was not sure if the right Luka was being discussed.

The Suns star also took the opportunity to take a shot at the Mavericks Twitter/X account after the deal was done. Booker may not have to relive the infamous staredown, at least from the Mavericks, for the foreseeable future.

Another Phoenix Suns player who chimed in on the Doncic trade was Kevin Durant. The two-time NBA champion took the opportunity to point out his perception of the hypocrisy around loyalty in the league, as originally reported by Duane Rankin.

“Players are held to a different standard of loyalty and commitment to a program but the organizations don’t get held to that same standard from the outside.”

Mavericks franchise legend Dirk Nowitzki did not have much to offer in terms of words. However, his reaction was perfectly captured in one brief and candid emoji.

Nowitzki can, at the least, rest easy at night knowing that his legacy as the greatest player in Mavericks’ history will not be put under threat from Doncic anymore.

Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton had a similar reaction to a large portion of the NBA community. The Pacers star did not know whether ESPN insider Shams Charania was a victim of losing his login credentials to someone else.

CJ McCollum and Bam Adebayo had similarly confused responses to this trade going down.

New York Knicks star, and former Mavericks teammate, Jalen Brunson was confused about what day of the year it was when he heard the news.

It feels safe to say, given the disbelief from some of the NBA’s best, that the Lakers made out like bandits in their acquisition of Doncic.
