The Broncos continue to surprises this season and after securing back to back victories for the second time have now extended their impressive start to a 5-3 record and sit second in the AFC West and in a projected playoff place.
Whilst fans of the side are pleased with their promising start – and the ever-improving rookie quarterback Bo Nix, head coach Payton tempered things.
“I said this, it’s not a good offense we played. It’s just the truth. So we expected that, and we’re going to see a lot better teams.” Payton told reporters
Harsh words from the coach but he’ll need his side to be ruthless heading into a tough run of fixtures in the upcoming weeks.
First a trip to the Baltimore Ravens (5-3) awaits the Broncos, a Ravens team reeling from a surprise defeat to the Cleveland Browns.
That is followed by the ultimate test against back-to-back Super Bowl champions and the so far undefeated Kansas City Chiefs (7-0).
Not only is the team excelling at the moment, rookie Bo Nix finds himself prospering under the guidance of his head coach.
Career highs in completions, passing yards, passing TDs and passer rating sealed another emphatic performance for the 24-year-old.
Now whilst spirits are high in the camp it would be very easy for the team to start becoming disillusioned, however, Payton is grounded in his approach to his game and still sees Sunday’s victory as an opportunity for his side to improve.
“Tomorrow, we’re watching this tape. We’re all in there. It’s important.
“This can happen sometimes… In losses you can miss some things that are really good, and then in wins, if you’re not careful, you can miss some things that have to be cleaned up.
“So we’ll try to do that tomorrow and then flip the page for Baltimore and get ready for a real good team.”
It all makes for an impressive turnaround for Payton and his side who left some cause for concern after dropping their opening two games against Seattle and Pittsburgh to start the regular season.
Since then the team have won five of their last six games beating the Buccaneers, Jets, Raiders and Saints to give Payton a strong start to his second season.
Even more impressive has been the play of Nix who has 870 passing yards, seven touchdowns and one interception for the month of October.
