Christmas falls on Wednesday, Dec. 25 this year. If the holiday crept up on you, then you aren’t alone. Thanksgiving landed late on the calendar this year, leaving less than four weeks between the two holidays, meaning there were fewer Christmas shopping days than usual.
If it’s Christmas morning and you just realized that you’re missing an ingredient essential for your holiday appetizer, main course or dessert, or Santa forget to deliver the batteries needed to power the latest and greatest tech toys he left underneath the tree, you may still be able to pick up what you need at these grocery stores open on Christmas Day.
Unsurprisingly, nearly all major retailers and grocers, including Walmart, Target, Aldi, Costco and Trader Joe’s, are closed in observance of the holiday, and won’t reopen until Thursday morning, Dec. 26. But if you find yourself in a bind this year, there are a handful of grocers, pharmacies and convenience stores that will remain open and you’ll find them in this comprehensive list, as well as a rundown of grocery stores that will be closed in observance of the holiday.
Note that even though these retailers are listed below, select locations may be closed, have reduced hours or different hours than those mentioned. To confirm store hours, use the accompanying store locator before heading out to ensure doors are open on Christmas Day when you arrive.
Grocery stores open on Christmas Day 2024
ACME: Select locations may be open with reduced hours.
Albertsons: Select locations may be open with reduced hours.
Giant Food: Many stores are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All pharmacies are closed except for Bethesda, Catonsville and Pikesville. Select gas stations will be open (if host store is open) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Giant pickup is closed.
ShopRite: Stores are independently owned and operated. While a majority will be closed, select locations may be open with reduced hours.
Safeway: Select locations may be open with reduced hours.
Vons: Select locations may be open with reduced hours.
Pharmacies open on Christmas Day 2024
CVS: According to a CVS spokesperson, many CVS locations will be open during regular hours on Christmas. That said, “some stores may be closed or have reduced hours.” With that in mind, CVS recommends that people call local stores before visiting or check hours.
Walgreens: According to a Walgreens’ spokesperson, most Walgreens stores will be open on Christmas Day with adjusted operating hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 24-hour Walgreens locations and 24-hour pharmacies will remain open.
Convenience stores open on Christmas Day
Casey’s: Stores will open at 10 a.m. and close at regular business hours.
Certified Oil: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Cumberland Farms: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Fastrac: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Kwik Shop: Store will be open during normal business hours.
Kum & Go: Stores will be open.
Loaf ‘N Jug: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Minit Mart: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Quik Stop: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Pilot Flying J: Stores are open 24 hours.
7-Eleven: A majority of 7-Eleven locations will be open 24/7 with some locations operating with adjusted hours.
Sprint: Stores are open during normal business hours.
Tom Thumb Convenience Stores: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
Turkey Hill: Stores will be open during normal business hours.
